Porn star Linda Lovelace shocked the world when, following “Deep
Throat,” an
adult film which “heralded the start of porn chic among the cognoscenti
of New York and Los Angeles,” she announced that she had been an unwilling
participant in the film, actually held “hostage” by her husband and
forced to do the graphic sex scenes. Linda eventually escaped from her abusive
husband and soon took refuge with the “anti-porn” crusaders who had
earlier condemned her for her role in “Deep Throat.”
Set during the glory days of the late 70’s, “Lovelace: The
Musical” is
a contemporary Rock Opera in the same style as “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Hair.” It
is a look back at the beginning of the sexual revolution. A revolution that was
brought out of the closet by a low-budget porn film called ‘Deep
Throat” and
an inexperienced porn actress named Linda Lovelace.
“ Lovelace” is Linda’s journey from her claustrophobic small
town life into the world of pornography and eventually a cross-over into the
Hollywood elite. It is her journey from a life of glamour and sex to a radical
shift into the arms of the “anti-porn” opposing camp.
Her dreams of becoming a “movie star” bastardized by an abusive husband/manager,
Linda is forced into prostitution and eventually pornography, only to achieve
a level of fame and success that has, to this day, not been matched. In the 1970’s
and 80’s Linda Lovelace was the first “porn star” to appear
on the cover of Playboy, Woman’s Day, Esquire and Newsday magazines. She
was also a guest on “The Tonight Show” with Johnny
Carson.
“ Deep Throat” is universally considered the first “water cooler” porn
movie; one that would be discussed out in the open, among co-workers, friends
and even family. It was the first adult film to be considered acceptable to be
seen watching and even enjoying. “When ‘Deep Throat’ premiered,
even certain members of the women’s movement welcomed the film as sexually
liberating.” The star of the film, Linda Lovelace, was not your average
adult film actress. She was pretty, but not beautiful, thin and not voluptuous,
resembling the girl next door rather than your wildest fantasy.
“ Lovelace” is written in the style of the 70’s but with a
contemporary feel and will be performed as a “rock opera” with soaring
ballads, driving rhythms, blues, disco and rock.
The characters in “Lovelace” are compelling and larger than life – the
innocent “forced” into the world of prostitution and porn, the “brutal” husband
who sells his wife to the highest bidder and thinks only of himself and money, “The
King Of Sex” who runs a publishing empire and has a taste for the bizarre, “The
Entertainer,” one of Hollywood’s most beloved performers who seeks
Linda’s “talents,” the comical creators of the most successful
adult film of all time and “The Crusader,” who recruits Linda as
an “anti-porn” mouthpiece.
“ Lovelace” is, at times comical, moving and disturbing. It is also
uplifting and deeply involving. Audiences will re-live the life of Linda
Lovelace,
a controversial icon whose journey many may find to be factual and many will
believe is pure Linda Lovelace fiction.
The Theatre of NOTE showcase will feature eight songs and selected scenes from
the musical. |
